Video has
emerged of Islamic State fighters reportedly launching an 'assassination
attempt' on the convoy of Iraqi Defence Minister Khaled al-Obeidi.
The
convoy was travelling near Mosul, in the north of Iraq, to visit troops
at the Qayyarah airbase on Monday when the mortar attack occurred, it
has been reported.
The
dramatic video shows a machine gunner fighting back amid yelling and
incoming fire from ISIS fighters repeatedly hitting the convoy.
However, it has reportedly been confirmed since that no one was injured.
The
Iraqi Defence Ministry confirmed in a statement Al-Obeidi had survived
an 'assassination attempt' but did not name the group involved, The Anadolu Agency said.
But
the ministry had said Al-Obeidi’s convoy had come under fire from a
mortar attack late Monday near the Imam Gharbi village, near an area
held by the terrorist group.
The Telegraph
reports that the video was initially posted on Al-Obeidi's Facebook
page, then later released to the media by a member of the Iraqi ministry
of defence.
The
paper said Iraqi soldiers had recently established a defence south of
Mosul but ISIS fighters were still able to mount the attack.
