Leicester City were the surprise package last season, winning the Premier League with a squad of low-profile transfers and a manager that had struggled in his previous position in charge of the Greek national team. The Foxes came together to claim the title, though there were always concerns that the team would fall apart during the summer, as richer clubs swoop in to take the best talent on show at the King Power Stadium.
Initially, the main targets were the trio of Jamie Vardy, N’Golo Kante and Riyad Mahrez, all of whom had excellent campaigns and contributed significantly to Leicester’s success. Vardy decided to remain and sign another contract extension, Kante switched to Chelsea, and Mahrez could potentially decide to leave in the next couple of weeks. However, it would appear that Leicester are still not safe from raiding clubs, with even young prospects and fringe players being targeted.
19-year-old full-back Ben Chilwell has been doggedly pursued by Liverpool, despite spending half of the season on loan at Huddersfield Town. While Leicester seem to have managed to keep hold of their player, the fact that it’s not just the superstars who are being targeted could indicate that the next month is going to be a testing time for the Foxes, and potentially decide where they end up next season.
