The Niger Delta Avengers said Thursday that – contrary to earlier reports they have not agreed a ceasefire with the Nigerian government in the oil-rich region, reports David Sheppard in London.
Oil’s paring losses on the announcement, with Brent recovering above $50 a barrel (still down 1.1 per cent) off an earlier low of $49.50.
The militant group, which has slashed Nigeria’s production through a string of attacks, said on Twitter:
The NDA High Command never remember having any agreement on ceasefire with the Nigeria Government.
Interesting wording. Does not seem like the sort of thing one would forget.
Reuters had earlier cited Nigerian oil officials saying a month-long truce had been agreed with militant groups, including the NDA, in the region.
The Tweet on Tuesday does not deny holding talks, however, which the group has done in previous statements.
