Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari issued an apology after launching an anti-corruption campaign with a speech that plagiarized President Barack Obama’s 2008 victory address.
Buhari vowed Friday in a statement to punish those responsible for the plagiarism. He is set to meet with Obama in New York next week.
Buhari’s Sept. 8 speech to kick off his “Change Begins with Me” campaign included several sentences nearly identical to Obama’s, including “We must resist the temptation to fall back on the same partisanship, pettiness and immaturity that have poisoned our country for so long.”
In his own speech, Obama had said, “Let us resist the temptation to fall back on the same partisanship and pettiness and immaturity that has poisoned our politics for so long.”
Melania Trump was widely criticized for giving a speech at the GOP convention with some sentences eerily similar to one given years earlier by Michelle Obama.
The two leaders are set to meet next week at the United Nations.
