The National Coordinator of the Oodua
People’s Congress, Gani Adams, has disclosed that his organisation, the
Oodua Peoples’ Congress (OPC) is taking its time before deciding on the
steps to take against suspected militants and pipeline vandals who have
been terrorising some communities in Lagos and Ogun states.
Adams, who spoke with newsmen in Lagos,
condemned the recent spate of attacks on some selected communities in
Lagos and Ogun states, and described the activities of the suspected
militants as criminal.
While disclosing that his organisation
is under pressure from some communities who are seeking its assistance
in repelling the suspected militants, Adams said the OPC is still
weighing the options open to it, saying that he has to be sure that
members of his organisation would not be affected by its action. “We
have to be sure that our members are no criminalised for whatever action
that we take.
“What happened in Ikorodu is highly
unfortunate. But people of Yoruba are the only people that play politics
with their lives and properties,” Adams said.
The OPC leader described as unfortunate,
the demonisation of his organisation by the people, including Yoruba,
security agents and the media, adding that the attitude of the people
has affected the morale of his members.
When you have a dog that is preventing
criminals from coming to your house and you take it to the veterinary to
remove its teeth; when criminals come to your house, what will the dog
use to fight them?”
He, however, promised that the organisation will take the necessary step at the right time.
“We will put our house in order. We will work and do the appropriate thing at the appropriate time.
“Would law enforcement agencies not
twist it against us again? We still have some of our members in Kirikiri
and Ikoyi prisons on an issue related to securing a street. An armed
robber was killed and the police twisted it as murder.
“What we are saying now is that it has
happened and the law enforcement agents cannot arrest any of the
vandals, if we move to do it, are we sure the law enforcement agents
would not use it against us? Those are the two main things because we
have worked to redeem the image of the OPC and we don’t want anything to
tarnish it again.”
