Leicester City is not sitting back on its haunches as it attempts to
defend the most unlikely English Premier League title in a generation.
According to the BBC , Claudio Ranieri’s club has agreed a fee with CSKA Moscow for Ahmed Musa, the Nigerian winger, for what will probably turn out to be a “club-record” fee.
Musa, 23, is understood to have turned down a host of offers, many
from Premier League clubs including Southampton and West Ham United, in
favor of joining Leicester.
CSKA Moscow coach Leonid Slutsky, also the manager of Russia at UEFA
Euro 2016, told Russian media on Sunday that Musa would be leaving the
club “on Tuesday.” His destination is almost certainly going to be the
East Midlands.
So why all the excitement? Possibly because Musa is a player likely to get fans themselves hot under the collar.
The skilful, speedy winger scored 54 times in 168 appearances for
CSKA in Russia; last season was his most prolific, with 13 goals in 29
appearances.
While Ranieri has to be wary of changing the structure and atmosphere
of a settled side too much, the one thing he really needs to add is
depth of quality.
Musa can give him that, as a definite upgrade on Marc Albrighton, the
English winger whose position he should compete for and perhaps even
usurp. If Ranieri is serious about making progress in the UEFA Champions
League and defending the Premier League—and there are no indications he
is not, no matter how unlikely it is he will achieve those aims—players
like Musa are the ones he needs to add in bulk.
