The 7 Division Garrison of the Nigerian Army, the unit in charge of the counter-insurgency efforts, and the Borno State Police Command have announced that they have launched an investigation into a fracas that resulted in the shooting of a policeman by a soldier in Maiduguri on Thursday morning.
In a statement jointly signed by Col. S.B Kumapaiye, Commander, 7 Division Garrison ( Operation Lafiya Dole) and Aminchi Samaila Baraya, Borno State Police, the two security agencies said the situation was swiftly contained. They also condemned the incident.
"The Army and the Police are jointly investigating the cause of the fracas with a view to ensuring that anyone found culpable amongst the security men are made to face disciplinary measures in line with laid down rules of the Nigerian Armed Forces.
"Findings and measures taken will be brought to public knowledge as soon as possible," said the two agencies.
According to them, the incident was caused by a disagreement between the soldier and the policeman, leading to the latter being shot in the leg. The injured police officer has since undergone surgery and is responding well to treatment.
"The policeman is responding to treatment and has been visited at the theatre by Commander, Operation Lafiya Dole, Major General LEO Irabor, and the Commissioner of Police, Borno State Command, Aminchi Baraya, both of whom went together to sympathize with the policeman," revealed the statement.
Both security agencies said they will continue working together to ensure the success of the counter-insurgency efforts in Borno State and called their personnel to exercise restraint in the course of their duties.
The incident had its root in an exercise by the state government to distribute rice to Internally Displace Persons (IDPs) in 28 wards of the two local councils in Maiduguri and Jere Local Government Areas.
It kicked off on Sunday at old Maiduguri ward for Jere Local Government Area and at Shehuri North Ward for Maiduguri. But it was disrupted by hoodlums, who overpowered officials in charge of the exercise in both locations and went away with many bags of the rice.
On account of this, explained the Army and Police, officials tasked with the distribution were forced to relocate to the vicinity of the Deputy Governor's residence in order to ensure security. Subsequently, the exercise ran smoothly until Thursday morning when the shooting took place.
